This installation art piece is inspired by the Ding Guanpeng’s painting “Scroll of the Buddha of infinite life.” Starting from the simple idea to create an art piece that mentally and emotionally provides a serene space for relaxation, we engraved and light up the acrylic stands, which set a serene atmosphere. The centerpiece of the installation is a small Buddha sculpture, symbolizing peace.
Ding Guan Peng's Scroll of the Buddha of Infinite Life
We traced the initial drawing to refine the layout of drawing of the installation. This process involved carefully going over the original sketch to ensure that all proportions and elements were accurate and well-aligned.
By tracing the design, we were able to clarify the details of each layer, particularly focusing on the placement of the Buddha, surrounding features, and the cave structure. This step helped us define the boundaries of the artwork and ensure that the layers would come together harmoniously in the final installation. Tracing also allowed us to assess how different elements, such as lighting and the Buddha figure, would interact visually within the overall composition.
What Decisions Shaped This Art?

Decision 2.
Adapting the Concept to a Table-Friendly Form
Thought completely enclosed environment would not work out, so decided to make something that can be placed on the table.

Decision 4.
Enhancing the Project with Integrated Lighting
Thought of additional features that can be integrated to the project (lights).

Decision 1.
Creating a Private Space through Complete Isolation
Wanted to create somewhat private environment.
Initially came up with making a completely enclosed area, to be isolated from surroundings

Decision 3.
Blending Spiritual Art with a Cave-Inspired Design
Wanted to make something that looks like a cave, so I came up with an idea to make a Buddha sculpture, put it in middle, and surround it with a cave like structure.
The Journey of Awakening
-
Start off with cloud, as if the audience is going into the art work
-
Heng & Ha: meet with the gatekeepers, show a sense of awe
-
Kashyapa & Ananda: before meeting buddha, get pious
-
Buddha: set in the middle
-
Four Vajra Kings: show that mythical beings in Buddhism is keeping the audience safe
-
Umbrella: Umbrella is a symbol of embracement in Buddhism —> By placing this at the back, wanted to emphasize that Buddism is for everyone

The central focus on the Buddha sculpture, enhanced by the layered acrylic structure, turned out well. The careful placement of the lights under the Buddha created the desired effect of drawing viewers’ attention to the center, successfully evoking a sense of peace and contemplation. The use of traditional materials like hanji gave the piece and authentic cultural sense. Overall, the balance between modern and traditional elements worked well in creating a reflective, serene atmosphere.
